SWP 638 Lecture 5: Week 7 Lecture 5
Document Summary
Mixed method study design has become more popular in the last few years (past ten years too, especially social and health services) Funders highly favour it, in terms of wanting to see a mixed method study design. Mixed method data collection, not just necessarily for research evaluation purposes. C(cid:396)iti(cid:395)ue: it(cid:859)s (cid:396)ei(cid:374)fo(cid:396)(cid:272)i(cid:374)g a la(cid:396)ge(cid:396) age(cid:374)da, that the o(cid:374)l(cid:455) (cid:449)a(cid:455) to p(cid:396)o(cid:448)e o(cid:374)e(cid:859)s (cid:272)(cid:396)edi(cid:271)ilit(cid:455) is through the use of numbers. The debate from qualitative researchers: mixed methods can devolve into superficiality, quantitative methods gain more attention, qualitative methods become diluted, and often not followed concisely. (cid:373)i(cid:454)i(cid:374)g has (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)e (cid:373)o(cid:396)e a(cid:374)d (cid:373)o(cid:396)e i(cid:374) (cid:455)ou(cid:396) fa(cid:272)e, the(cid:396)e(cid:859)s a push to (cid:373)i(cid:454) (cid:373)ethods because you need the funding money to carry out your work. Merging: occurs when the two sides and their findings are juxtaposed or interwoven. Example: qualitative typology of racially biased attitudes (cid:272)o(cid:373)pa(cid:396)ed to pa(cid:396)ti(cid:272)ipa(cid:374)ts(cid:859) scores on a measure of racial bias.
