Language isn"t fixed multiple changing & contestable diverse form of communication. Multiple & contradictory messages can be interpreted. Discourses are not set in stone: dominant discourses can be resisted. Strengths are the same as their weakness: they are unchallenged & uncritically accepted. One of the first steps toward critical change= able to name different possibilities. Unsettling & destabilizing commonly held or accepted beliefs= power set of strategies. Any one discourse can involve number of subject positions : eg: any one perspective comes form particular subject holding particular position. Discourses operate to serve particular interests in particular contexts. Plurality of positions open up opportunity for change. Based on understanding of how discourses shape meaning. People construct their social world through language. Discourse analysis uncovers way we talk about & label experience: uncovering hidden perspectives. Implicit assumptions: meanings which are distorted or repressed, constructed binary oppositional categories.
