History of social welfare in canada: our colonial inheritance. Before europeans came, there were many different first nations. Each nation has its own individual culture language, & customs. First nations varied considerably and had disagreements mostly about equality approach. Effort to take care of everyone"s needs n collect ve fas on. 1781- 1867, first nations signed treaties with crown which they ceded certain lands for certain treaty rights. First nation did not understand language of these treaties viewed them as sacred. The crown broke many of these agreements and continues today f s ng, utt ng . Individual ownership of land is a foreign concept to first nations. 1867 british north american act was given exclusive rights for indians and their land. First nations not involved in developing this act act gave control to european settlers. First nations could not elect politicians until 1960. Many federal policies are racist & disempower first nations people.
