Tensions: art vs science, cos vs shm, practice vs theory. Today"s goals: understanding the history, development, and influences of social work in north. America: progressive (macro; social advocacy) vs professional (micro; individualized care) Social work in north america today: 2 major goals, provide service (specific, advocate for change (general) Individual vs structural: funding is usually what separates the two, people want to avoid rocking the boat. This is similar to those who take advantage of being racially passing.
