In big data: a revolution that will transform how we live, work, and think (p. 150 170). 1990"s east german spies called stasi spied on millions of people and endued families to spy on each other. Recorded and detailed the most intimate aspects of the lives of ordinary people. The internet has made tracking easier, cheaper and more useful. The ability to capture personal data is often built deep into the tools we use every day, from websites to smart phone apps. But companies may be powerful, but they don"t have the states powers to coerce. The essential point about big data is that a change of scale leads to a change of sate (possibility of using big data predictions about people to judge and punish them even before they"ve acted. This negates ideas of fairness, justice and free will)
