Representations of race
Overview: race in relation to ideology

1. Hall and Ideology:
- Building on Marxist idea: once there are formed we can think of them as a lens for
looking at things. It frames/constitutes our consciousness

- He draws on Marxist idea: ideologies produce certain forms of consciousness. People
socially construct ideologies (products of consciousness). Ideologies are constructive of
our consciousness. Ex. An ideology in our social world that frames how we think:
Patriarchy: the male is the dominant person in society, ex2. Little kid grown up in a
society where he is introduced to heteronormative relationships, you have the idea that
you too will grow up to marry someone of the opposite sex. (you imagine yourself that
way too).
Media and Ideology:
- Media is place where ideology is reproduced
- Organic in a way, because it is part of culture, it is changing in relation to culture.
- Ideologies are being contested (not one version of ideology ie. Race, gender etc.)
Racism: Overt and Inferential:
- One is not simply racist and not racist, it is a constant work to not be racist. Racism is
very subtle; we are immersed in culture that is steeped in racist ideology.
