Social activism and sports part one: there has been no oppression in the last 100 years that i know of. I"m not watching it as carefully as other people : knows an experience being a white male. Henricks (2006): sport fosters many of the same values that durkheim promoted through moral sociology: self-discipline, diligence, obedience to (moral) authority, and collective responsibility. Maguire (2004): sports is in need of involved advocacy of a human development model to replace the dominant achievement approach in sport, in this model, justice, citizenship, and equity would be the overarching themes. It is escapism place where we can forget problems of the regular day. Demonstrative socio-political athletes int eh sporting space ruptures the constructed mirage of sport as an oasis of apolitical solace for participants and, especially, spectators: ex. Tommie smith"s and john carlo"s famous black power" salute at the mexico.
