The surge in media coverage of sport-related deviance cannot be understood apart form the rise in all forms of sport-related entertainment. If a commoner is convicted of a crime and they are convicted criminally but also socially, ex. In a workplace when it is a celebrity, it is understood differently, and more likely to be given a pass. Privilege is given: accommodating this range of behaviours requires a broad definition of sports deviance. Be treated by coaches etc. with dignity and respect. Not demeaned and dehumanized: competition must be fair, meaning, the administration of leagues and the supervision of contests must be governed by rules applied impartially to all parties, there are not acts of bias. Money winnings in tennis, race and position in football or race and gender in golf. Consistent with interactionist and social learning theories of criminality. Deviant over-conformity focuses on the processes involved in deviant behaviour.
