Overview
- The “Supercrip”
- Integration in AB sports
Questions
- What do you think is the intended meaning of these representations?
- What is different about these representations? How do they each evoke the intended
meaning?
The supercrip
- Disabled people framed as inspiring
- For shadowing courage and determination in the face of their “plight”
- What does the logic of overcoming the limits of disability suggest about the original
state of being disabled?
- The supercrip narrative rests upon and therefore reiterates the idea of disability as a
lesser / tragic / difficult life
- When people celebrate the supercrip:
- How do able-bodied people feel?
- How might other disabled people feel, who are not supercrips?
- What are the social effects of the circulation of Supercrip stories?
Pistorius vs IAAF
- Oscar Pistorius was prevented from competing in IAAF sanctioned events in 2007
- After undergoing voluntary testing Pistorius was considered ineligible
- Testing in Cologne looked at his energy expenditure of the ankle in running
- Energy loss in anke: 41.4%, energy loss in cheetah blade 9.3%
- Thus illustrates that the blade provides an advantage over the natural ankle
- He sought integration with AB athletes in 2008
- He claimed discrimination against his right to compete (no ankle to make him eligible)
- It was deemed only discriminatory if the prosthesis does not provide an advantage
- Considering the effects of the blade: less energy, no vertical force (he runs flatter),
less metabolic energy could result from flatter energy, oxygen uptake was the same
- First study did not look at overall advantage
- The CAS overturned the IAAFs ruling
- While energy metabolism is a major factor in distances over 400m, the effect of the
blade is more complex
- Thinking more cynically, why might the IAAF be so quick to try and find reasons the
exclude a disabled athlete?
- What are the implications of integration that people might oppose?

Document Summary
For shadowing courage and determination in the face of their plight . The supercrip narrative rests upon and therefore reiterates the idea of disability as a lesser / tragic / difficult life. Oscar pistorius was prevented from competing in iaaf sanctioned events in 2007. After undergoing voluntary testing pistorius was considered ineligible. Testing in cologne looked at his energy expenditure of the ankle in running. Energy loss in anke: 41. 4%, energy loss in cheetah blade 9. 3% Thus illustrates that the blade provides an advantage over the natural ankle. He sought integration with ab athletes in 2008. He claimed discrimination against his right to compete (no ankle to make him eligible) It was deemed only discriminatory if the prosthesis does not provide an advantage. Considering the effects of the blade: less energy, no vertical force (he runs flatter), less metabolic energy could result from flatter energy, oxygen uptake was the same. First study did not look at overall advantage.
