Document Summary

Child, sibling, and adolescence abuse: child abuse. Sibling and adolescent abuse is not studied very much: this is because they are not recognized as abuse and they are especially not reported. All the way from the old testament and the roman law and even before that time, the power of corporal punishment belonged to the patriarch in the family. The first legal case in the canadian context that leads to and defines what leads to moderate correction. It said that you could only spank open handed, it had to be on the butt only, and it could not leave a mark. Child abuse looks at how children are minors and have little social power in society. What we also see is that with gender, violence starts with child abuse in a woman"s life and continues throughout to elder abuse. We look at how patriarchy places girls and women in these positions of subordination and vulnerability to this abuse.
