Often times people were both legal and blood related. In the last 40 or 50 years this definition is not appropriate to define how people understand the family. Family is now people who recognize each other as family, people who provide emotional support (this is reciprocal) The family has historically been regarded as love, nurture and emotional support: family is also one of the most dangerous places for women and children, place of violence especially for the members who are disempowered. Physical violence people typically think of violence as just physical.
