Document Summary
How a young person obtains a core means for socialization, the family is the main and first method. For babies and young children, the family is the gateway for the rest of society. Even when the child gets older, the family is still important, but not to the same degree. The older a young person gets, the more important method for socialization is their peer groups opposed to families. 94% of canadians between 15-19 report their friends as the number one source of entertainment. Young peoples relationships with their peers are incredibly important. In late modern society, young people have fewer and fewer traditional/normative structures guiding them through society. For young people now, they have less guidance from kinship groups (religion, families, etc. ) E. g. for a young women in the 1950s, the clear narrative is very clear - finish high school, get married young, start having kids, devote life to family, etc.
