SOC 473 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Social Fact, Anomie, Deontological Ethics
Document Summary
Durkheim concepts: suicide, anomie, social facts, division of labour, objectivity, religion. For example what if gender is a social fact: It is not a physiological fact, but a social construction, it constrains individuals through social sa(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374)s . Society tells us we need a better job, influence of friends family and significant others, following along with the constraints can give us freedoms. We need to be aware of how our actions affect the people around us. Seems to tell us that we ought to conform to societal norms. But society is always evolving, changing, and norms change. We have to create and disseminate new concepts, social activism, create new social facts. Create new ways of acting that exist independently of individual manifestations that are general throughout society and that constrain individuals. Criticism: durkheim is a white, male, hetereosexual, cisgendered person following norms may benefit him more than it does other people, he is speaking from his perspective.
