Readings: (1) milbrandt article and (2) adams article. Deviance: (broad umbrella-not everything is seen as deviant) a form of behaviour, which is considered to violate society"s norms. Crime: (deviant act and behaviours that are deemed significantly harmful to society are made into crimes by legislation. Have to wait for someone to commit crime in order to punish them. Social regulation: refers to government-imposed restrictions (i. e. laws or by-laws) designed to discourage or prohibit harmful behaviour or to encourage behaviour deemed socially desirable. Its proactive and an attempt to prevent deviance. Ex: going into elevator and people stop to not pick their nose because it"s a social regulation. Adams reading: highlights that there are particular locations in toronto. If people were seen hanging out in certain area, they would address that such as toronto island. >news programs give sense of where criminals are and what they are: business also control what can be considered deviant such as loitering.
