Document Summary

Readings: rhonda howard-hassmann (2006); marion boyd (2007); sheema khan (2007); There is a distinct canadian social ethnicity. Immigration used to be based on an assimilation model (until the point system) New policy in 1981 not only permits people to keep their ethnic identity, but encourages it. Lets them identify with their own ethnicity, while still being apart of the canadian nation. Very different from the us, where they have assimilation. In america your ethnicity becomes american, but in canada you keep your ethnicity and become canadian. Multiculturalism is about celebrating differences, but only selectively. It sent a message that minorities are welcome in this predominant white catholic/protestant country. While we welcomed other cultures, it was in fact a private matter, your ethnicity was not to interfere with business. You can celebrate it in your own home and community. Liberal multiculturalism education allows for children to negotiate their own individual identity, using their ethnic identity as one of many resources.
