SOC 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Traditional Authority, Petite Bourgeoisie, Conflict Theories
Document Summary
Marx was disturbed by the fact that so much wealth was created in england during the industrial revolution yet little of it was distributed to individuals upon whose backs this wealth was created. Some lived in opulent wealth, while other did not. Workers worked six day weeks in crammed, dirty, and appalling conditions; child labor (6 and 7 years of age) was typical. He believed that all societies are organized around economic life or the mode of production. This economic life was based on slavery. In capitalism, workers work for the bourgeoisie (work by free choice: work or starve), capitalism rose when feudalism declined. History is the story of the struggle between the haves and have nots. Social change and development has not ever occurred without conflict or tension: the division of labour arises from the institution. In all time periods, there is a conflict between these two groups.
