From a functionalist perspective we can see youth and the youth experience as a phase of hedonism before adulthood. Blowing off responsibilities to indulge in self interest. Experiencing youth culture is temporary & was historically considered devoid of critical agency or any really worth of analysis. Parents tend to be condescending to put us in our place but when we get older we start to stand up for ourselves. The study of youth culture as a sociological issue is shaped by 2 positions. The youth problem: shaped by a series of arguments through which we see youth culture emerge. Called the youth problem because society tells us it is a problem. Our parents don"t want us to do something so we do it. Wayward youth: youth without a strong family and social foundation . Allows these children to be rebellious because of this excuse.
