How small cities in southern ontario have changed over time, from old main street" to the new main street of big box stores. Changes to geographical distribution of shopping areas, traffic flow patterns. Changes to consumer experience: sheer scale, less opportunity to socialize, people watch, not usually navigated by foot, more accessible in some ways? (parking spaces, etc. ) We have been building a national landscape that is largely devoid of places worth caring about. 3 imaginings of hamilton (could be said about many cities in southern ontario) Influx of artist communities, big c culture as inherently good, transformative. Idealized working class culture; hardworking, traditional values, protestant work ethic. Drive to fix hamilton (pre 2015 pan am games) City councillor: let"s commit ourselves to fixing downtown once and for all. We have to do something with the peep show, bingo parlour and thrift store. We also have to deal with the people who have taken control of downtown through squatters" rights.
