Aboriginal Peoples Today:
- 2016 census reveals this pattern:
- total: 1, 673, 785
- North American Indian (Status and Non-Status): 977, 230
- Metis: 587, 545
- Inuit: 65, 025
- Growth rate is 4X the rest of population
- Together: about 4.76% of population of Canada
Characteristics:
- Most disadvantaged of all Canadians in terms of income, employment, housing, nutrition,
and health
- Longevity is substantially less
- Highest infant mortality rate and disease
- Limited educational opportunities
Racial profiling in Canada
Aboriginal Canadians:
- Adults incarcerated more than 6 times more often than anyone else
- Institutional discrimination- police make decision to arrest, courts make decision to
prosecute
- 2.85% of pop and 17% of federal prison inmates
- Manitoba- 61% of all inmates
- Alberta- over 35% of all inmates
- Sask= over 70% of 16 yr. old male Treaty Indians can except to go to prison at least once
Chinese Canadians
- Beginning in 1850s, Chinese men (wives and children were not allowed to come) came to
work on the Canadian Pacific Railway
- Wok was hard and fatal on occasion
- Nearly 17,000 men came
- Were subjected to prejudice and discrimination
- Dangerous work, many died
- Problem emerged when men wanted to bring family
- Head tax, on family members they wanted to bring to disincentive
