SOC 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Big Fish Theory, Human Behaviour, Determinism
Document Summary
The theory that some human behaviour is predetermined by our biological makeup. The belief that we are unable to put an end to many social issues because they are rooted in our biological nature. Big fish theory focus our attention on biology instead of the social aspect of human behaviour. We are born with it / it"s in our genetics. Every member of the species has this. Commonly believed instincts include survival, maternity, sex etc. but all of these can be challenged by things such as suicide, adoption and abstinence. Our genetics may create a tendency to drive us towards certain things but each individual has unique behaviours. Some believe that we have the ability to renounce or repress our instincts under certain circumstances, if this is true it begs the question of how do we differentiate our instinctual behaviours from the rejection of such.
