Biological distinction; first level of approximation, primary sex characteristics (characteristics that distinguish infants + children) and secondary (characteristics that distinguish adults) Sexual orientation the way people experience sexual arousal + achieve sexual pleasure. Up to 1950s + longer, it was seen as a binary (abnormal vs normal) Not until kinsey report that society talked about this. Homosexuality was seen as a mental illness; dsm listed it as a disorder. Gender social significance/importance that a society attaches to these categories it"s so(cid:272)ially (cid:272)o(cid:374)st(cid:396)u(cid:272)ted + (cid:272)ultu(cid:396)ally (cid:272)o(cid:374)st(cid:396)u(cid:272)ted real insofar as it affects how we see + think of ourselves + others. Nature vs nurture if gender was primarily a product of nature, that would mean all women etc would be the same. Mead: looked at 3 cultural groups in new guinea in 1930; at that time in that place, the groups were very distinct + had little contact with each other.
