SSH 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Critical Thinking, Peer Pressure, Fallacy
Document Summary
Truth value of a statement: is the statement true or false. Deductively valid argument: if both premises are true the conclusion must be true. Conclusion is the takeaway or what the speaker wants you to accept. The premises state reasons or evidence of the conclusion. Inference: if you are given some info you make a logical assumption based on the given evidence. eg. if you reach in a bag and grab 3 black marbles you may infer that all the marbles are black. It is the move from the premises to the conclusion. No, there is nothing proving the single statement. Can be very tricky because an explanation can sound like an argument. Best way to identify an argument is to start with nding the conclusion. We can also nd the argument by using indicator words. If you come across a paragraph with 2 therefores you can assume there is a sub argument.
