Condition affecting the structures or function of the heart: coronary heart disease, angina, myocardial infarct (heart attack) Activation of the sam (fight or flight) system: leads to increased heart rate, blood pressure and stress hormones, wear and tear of arteries over time. Arterial injury may result from: cholesterol build up along the walls (atherosclerosis) Progressive degenerative inflammatory disease that involved coronary atherosclerosis: leading cause of death for both men and women in north america. Irritation or injury stimulates the inflammatory response of the endothelial cells o the vascular wall. Buildup of plaque along arterial walls: cholesterol (ldl) buildup. People with hypertension are more likely to have high catecholamine levels. Connection between stressors and development of hypertension: the more reactive you are to stressors the more likely you are to develop hypertension.
