Psychoanalytic theories: depression as anger turned inward, superego (not acting morally will make them feel guilt or shame) But this doesn"t work for kids (they are not as morally developed) Depression as masked (indirect or hidden) because kids cognitive ability is not developed they do not have access to those inner thoughts: so it could look like: avoidance, withdrawal from others. Developmental stage it"s not just normal (not all teenagers experience mood swings and depression) Manifestation of depression varies with age: infant, preschooler, school-age child, adolescent. Depression not clearly recognizable using dsm until children are older. Symptom: feeling sad or miserable; may occur without serious problem; common at all ages; temporary and environmentally contingent. Syndrome: more than sad mood; occurs with cluster of associated symptoms (emotional, cognitive, vegetative: ex: reduced interest in activities, cognitive and motivational changes, somatic and psychomotor changes (could be bereavement) Case study: donna (from marsh & wolfe, 2013)
