PSY 402 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Maximum Life Span, Adult Development, Heart Rate
Document Summary
How do we define adult: an individual who passed through certain maturation stages, of legal age (. e. g. 18, physically developed, financially independent, social role, capable of making own decisions, being dependent upon rather than depending on others. How do we define development: patterns of growth how things can change, patterns of stability how things stay the same how things can grow rather than go downhill, patterns of deterioration in an adult population. Why study adult development: relevant in every other aspect of psychology. Personality, language etc: gain personal knowledge on successful aging, make you better at taking care of people around you. Their needs, what you can suggest for them, what developmental stage they are at. Better understand the adult population you care for as a nurse. Developmental psychology: all bout children: focused mainly on re-adolescent years. 1920s: studies on aging started: although they were not considered part of developmental psychology, focused on elderly rather than all developmental stages.
