The DSM-4 & DSM-5 Classification Scheme
DSM-1: 106 disorders
DSM-4: 365 disorders (DSM-5 has a few more)
oThe DSM increases in disorders every edition
Freud’s/ Lacan’s days = 3 major categories of disorders
Neurotic
Psychotic can’t go too deep they will discompose ego not intact
oE.g client crawled her skin out in order to prevent him “from getting
under her skin”
oHow far you can go?
Sexual perversion
oThe goal of diagnoses should be proper treatment
Lacan broke it up based on Freud’s work
Freud’s days  all talk= talk therapy
Therapy set upnot opening up and defensiveLying down changes them
emotionally and they don’t like it
Problems with DSM 4/5 Classification:
Dominated by medical perceptive on psychological disorders
Drug Company ties (%):
57% overall had ties to drug companies
70% for DSM-5
100% for mood disorder
81% for PMDD
17% substance- related disorder
Concerns about the reliability of diagnoses
Concerns about the validity of diagnoses
4 symptoms? 5symptoms? Need 5 to be diagnosed arbitrary number
10 days? 2 weeks?
oNo difference could still be depressed  rigid clinical might not
diagnose
oWant to be diagnosed so you can access resources you need for
treatment
Don’t get hung up on it though
Ritalin and Adderall 1 component away from crystal meth
Story: 3-year-old child died from over-dose (6 meds in their system (one was a
antipsychotic))
