What is memory learning, retention, and recall of information. Sperling (1960) in test 1, a flash of letters on a screen (sensory memory which can hold 3-4 items) In test two, same thing but require remembering a part of the full set. Sensory memory similar to stm but lasts shorter, both visual, auditory. Short term memory lasts longer than sensory memory. Masking (flash of letters, then a black square which causes you to forget the letters) has less effect. Recall after a time interval, some long, some short period. A linear curve downward for time vs memory graph. Two explanations of why we forget stuff in stm. Decay we forget things as time passes, can"t keep in memory for so long. Interference you forget as other things that enters your mind interferes with it. Had participants go through a lists of digits, search" for target digit. Digit could be early, or late in the list.
