PSY 308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Transactive Memory, Union Station, Problem Solving
- Current state, a problem and you have a goal state
- The givens are math, and there is one correct answer
- Here are the obstacles → the computational power, how much time are you willing to
investigate, cost and benefit (subjective self image) and anxiety
- Offloading → how we behave to limit the work that our brain has to do
- We can use an object to ease our load
o Intentional offloading → tmrw I gotta get milk so you write it on a list and we offload it
onto a device
o You have 2 hours to do a project and you can offload it into a phone
- The more confident we are to do something the less likely we will offload
o Im sure to get milk tmrw and I don’t need to write it (less use of reminders)
o If you have a to do list you are likely to do all those things
- Transactive memory → memory we share with people
- Google effect → the increase use of google will cause us to have bad recall (less NT release)
- 2011, people were typing sentences and a new sentence will appear
o Some were told that the sent will dis and restore OR disappear (using the word “store”
can make us process things less well and remember things)
- GPS → how do I get to union station from here?
o Your brain remembers less of the scenery, landmarks because you were aided wit GPS
and parts of brain turn off
- Camera phones → if you take a pic of it then you will remember it less
o The better the picture, the less you will remember it
- If we are more dependent on tech, our computational skills go down
- Spell-check
o Getting used to this, you have no confidence on how to spell things if you don’t have it
installed
- Confidence goes down and we become more reliant
- Offloading
o We start to think we are smarter because we use google
o The google experiment
▪ Group 1 think they have a better memory Google makes us think we are Google
(but you are getting less knowledge and cognitive power) – we take credit for
google
- Use GPS to get to B, but if you don’t have batteries anymore, you are screwed because you did
not encode anything
- Algorithms
o If you follow these steps, you will get an answer
- Heuristics
o Are not definitive
o Break it into easier problems and solve
o Save us more time which is why people tend to break down math problems
o In the real world, they are good enough
- Cautions
o Method can be wrong though

Document Summary
Current state, a problem and you have a goal state. The givens are math, and there is one correct answer. Here are the obstacles the computational power, how much time are you willing to investigate, cost and benefit (subjective self image) and anxiety. Offloading how we behave to limit the work that our brain has to do. We can use an object to ease our load. Intentional offloading tmrw i gotta get milk so you write it on a list and we offload it onto a device: you have 2 hours to do a project and you can offload it into a phone. The more confident we are to do something the less likely we will offload. Im sure to get milk tmrw and i don"t need to write it (less use of reminders) If you have a to do list you are likely to do all those things. Transactive memory memory we share with people.
