PSY 308 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Trolley Problem, Bioethics, Cognitive Dissonance
- You learn the association between happiness and movement
- If someone is being attack, the more people that is around the less likely you will get help – we
follow other peoples lead – by standard effect or diffused responsibility
- We don’t always get the right conclusion using System 2 (topics from last week)
- Language affects how we feel about things
- When we are angry and we feel better swearing in our first language
- When you get to your 5th language
o We prefer to swear in our first language
o We swear because we feel like we want to get something out
The trolley problem
o Do you kill the large person who dies and save the other 5 OR let the trolley kill the 5 ppl
o Most people would not push the large person
▪ It is personal and you would not push the person
• The 20% that would push the large person, when asked in first language
(all the feels), based on what we know, the number of ppl responding
will then be greater
o When asked in 2nd language, they would push the person
o This is like the bioethics question as it represents how human
feels and teach us how we get at the truth and what is moral
o Morality has to do with something personal
o In another version – flicking a switch would kill the large person
instead of pushing
o Using the 2nd language makes us less detached with the choice
o Like swearing, our reason is determined by our emotions
▪ We are system 1 ppl creating bonds and need to learn that imposing your will
on someone is not okay and is how society survives
- We need a structure – our if then statements
o The problem is that we need words to refer (words don’t refer to things perfectly)
o Conflict syllogisms
▪ We can understand how logic works and reject conclusions from premises that
are true if we don’t agree with conclusion
▪ We do all the work and disagree with the conclusion
o If we conquer our feelings we can say we learned something
▪ Are we adjusting the premises from prior beliefs or evidence?
Situation
- When you are out shopping buying cards, billboards are everywhere
o They can feel how we affect about the world
o When we are born, we are born to look at nipples and at eyes
o We look at tabloids which affect how we feel about the world

Document Summary
You learn the association between happiness and movement. If someone is being attack, the more people that is around the less likely you will get help we follow other peoples lead by standard effect or diffused responsibility. We don"t always get the right conclusion using system 2 (topics from last week) When we are angry and we feel better swearing in our first language. When you get to your 5th language: we prefer to swear in our first language, we swear because we feel like we want to get something out. The trolley problem: do you kill the large person who dies and save the other 5 or let the trolley kill the 5 ppl, most people would not push the large person. If the mind is given other things and not code racial information increase brain load. We don"t want anything terrible to happen to us. You will overestimate your chances of winning vs someone else.
