PSY 302 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Long-Term Memory, Joint Attention, Mental Representation
Document Summary
Psy302 week 5 chapter 4: theories of cognitive development. Advantages of knowing cognitive development theories: they provide a framework for understanding important phenomena. Infants younger than 8months react as though objects that disappear and do not understand why: raise crucial questions about humans nature. Do infants realize that objects/people continue to exist when out of sight, or do they learn this later: lead to better understanding of children. Child development has no single theory to account for all of it. Most informative theories focus on cognitive or social development. Cognitive development includes growth of equally diverse areas: emotions, personality, relationships with peers, and family members, self- understanding, aggression, and moral behaviour. This chapter will examine 4 theoretical perspectives on cog. development: Sociocultural: addresses nature-nurture, influence of sociocultural context, how change occurs. Dynamic-systems: addresses nature-nurture, the active child, how change occurs. Together, they allow a broad appreciation of cognitive development than any one does alone.
