Biological perspective, lack of maturation of the _____ until late adolescence or early adulthood. Strange situation - infants are upset when mom departs, happy when she returns. Emotions - mental states or feelings associated w/ our evaluation of our experiences. Several theories on what causes emotions but lots of support for which ones we have. Humans experience a small number of distinct emotions, even if they combine in complex ways. Emotions have biological roots and serve evolutionary functions. Fear - eyes get bigger, pupils dilate to see predators better. Also states that emotions (limbic system) precede our thoughts abt them (cortex). Bc limbic developed before cortex, we experience emotions before we interpret. Criticisms: if evolutionary in nature, emotions should be universal. Good support for 7 primary emotions: happiness, disgust, fear, sadness, surprise, anger, contempt. Display rules - how diff cultures differ in how and when to express emotion. Does not influence emotion itself but instead its overt expression.
