Learning about psychological disorders: medical students syndrome- when med and psychology students learn about disorders, they start self-diagnosing themselves, or others, obsessive compulsive disorder- when they are compulsively fixated with keeping things tidy, disclosure, respect. Statistical rarity- diagnose disorders based on how statistically rare they are. However, not all uncommon behaviours are bad (ex. Subjective distress- if an individual is experiencing distress as a result of mental health problem. However, not all psychological disorders have a distress piece (manic episode in. Bpd, personality disorder not felt so can"t diagnose). Impairment - failure to fulfill obligation in their role in daily life. Societal disapproval - if society thinks you are behaving atypical, perhaps that is mental health problem. However, we can"t rely on this because societal culture keeps changing. Homosexuality used to be considered a mental health problem anymore but it used to be a part of the diagnostic manual. Biological dysfunction - schizophrenia seems to be very biological.
