PSY 105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Peripheral Nervous System, Myelin, Olfactory Bulb
Document Summary
Brain, spinal cord, prodected by spinal fluid, Contains nerves cells controlling movement in your arms and. Contains nerve cells controlling movement in your legs and feet: peripheral nervous system. Motor nerves send messages to the muscles & glands from the brain. Sensory nerves send messages to the brain from our sensory organs and glands. Somatic nerves control voluntary use of muscles. Autonomic nerves control involuntary muscles and glands i. e. digestion. Sympathetic (controls stress) and parasympathetic (calms you down) Specialized to receive feedback from their environment: effector cells, neurons. Specialized for conducting electro-chemical messages from one part of the body to another; they also connect receptor cells with effector cells. Act as glue, nourish the central nervous system, discard waste, and produce myelin. Dendrites pick up signals from other neurons, which is then transmitted through the axon. At the end of the axon there are more outcroppings called axon terminals. These terminals connect with dendrites of other neurons.
