PSY 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Emic And Etic
Document Summary
Defining psychology: the scientific study of the mind, brain, and behaviour in an attempt to understand, predict, and in some cases, control human behaviour. The five main challenges of psychology: behaviour is difficult to predict, predictors are rarely independent, people are different from one another, people influence one another, behaviour is shaped by culture. Human behaviour is difficult to predict: actions are multiply determined. Predictors are rarely independent: with multiply determined factors, those factors in turn influence each other as well. Individual differences: people differ from each other in thinking, emotion, personality, and behaviour, that"s (cid:449)hy (cid:449)e respo(cid:374)d differe(cid:374)tly to the sa(cid:373)e o(cid:271)je(cid:272)ti(cid:448)e situatio(cid:374) Other people: reciprocal determinism (cid:449)e (cid:373)utually i(cid:374)flue(cid:374)(cid:272)e ea(cid:272)h other"s (cid:271)eha(cid:448)iour.
