Chapter 2: research methods (part 1: scientific method (pp. Independent variable variable that is manipulated by the experimenter. Levels= group a gets one dose and group b gets 2 doses. Dependent variable- what researcher measures to determine how much effect the iv had(59) ex. Pt. health is measured and compared possible to have more than one iv and more than one dv ex. Researcher is interested in how peoples heart rates are affected by viewing a violent seq as opposed to a nonviolent film sequences. Between subjects design- different people for each level of the iv ex. Expt group gets the drug; control group gets a placebo. Within subjects design within subjects design: same people for each level of the iv. Park pt, baseline health assessed b/4 drug(control) after the drug (expt condition) Effects of background music on reading comprehension levels; silence(control) hip hop (expt) country(expt) etc. Order in which conditions occur may be randomized to eliminate order effects.
