According to greek mythology, the gods cursed the human race by giving them the need to (cid:862)toil(cid:863) Ancient greeks and romans viewed most forms of work negatively, considering it brutalizing and uncivilized. Later monotheist religious and cultural values also placed a not so positive emphasis on work. During the protestant reformation [16th century] ideas about work changed significantly. With the introduction of factory-t(cid:455)pe produ(cid:272)tio(cid:374) [mar(cid:454)"s stea(cid:373) (cid:373)ills for e(cid:454)a(cid:373)ple] an older view of work arose again- one that was alienating, but in this case for the workers not for the elites. Workers tried to form associations as a way of protecting their jobs. Workers tried to create political movements caused by the backlash.
