Common definition: systematic and coherent set of ideas about society and the world. Implies ideologies require a bit of though development and research. Wants to preserve things or wants to change things. Political ideologies are belief systems: believe it to be true. Ideologies are held by a small percentage of the population: higher educated, etc. The average person has multiple opinions that do not have any connections to each other. Identifies the problem: analyzes the problem, finds solutions to the problem. Organize ideas according to how they fit in. Soviet union: everything is owned by the state, no opportunity to get rich, profits made are put back into the economy, no competition, wages are set, micromanaged planned economy, gov"t has full control. Democratic: willing to accept capitalism but make it more fair, less gov"t intervention.
