Week 3 thursday lecture notes: mass media refers to a form of communication that affects large numbers of people. The book monks transcribed the most and the bible (illuminated manuscripts) The printing press: the invention of the printing press in the 1500s lead to mass media. The printing press is a machine that could reproduce pages and books. It allowed info and knowledge to be accessible and spread around the world. It had huge impacts on the evolution of science and knowledge. It allowed europeans to develop maps and aided in their conquest of the world. Scientists were able to print out their experiments and distribute it to other scientists: printing press also contributed to the rise of democracy. There was no democracy until about the 1600s. Politics in the old days were controlled by monarchies.
