In feudal societies, power and authority were dispersed and divisible, often shared and struggled for among the nobility, the monarch- a king or queen, and the church. From the 15th century onward there was a demise of feudalism and an ascendancy of capitalism: political power began to consolidate with the centralization of political, military, and administrative powers within defined territorial boundaries. The state began to be seen as an independent structure of laws and institutions which rulers are trusted to administer on behalf of the community. The treaties of westphalia (1648) which ended the thirty years war (1618-1648). The number of sovereign states has also grown substantially in the past half century.
