In process of changing as of the late 20th century. Need something like grand unified theory of film . Freudian theory too simple (theory derived from trying to solve problem of psyche in his neurology patients), good positive feedback loop in his practice. Freud theory were developed to explain unexplainable, pathological not the everyday. Carroll says that film theory not pathological so freud theory doesn"t really apply, more of an everyday, cognitive theory (based on the research and how our perceptual apparatus works every day and evidence that supports it) Would take many years and many people. Better way is to have a series piecemeal theorizing , which as a whole moves towards the grand unifying theory of film. Ie. economic model of film production houses, marketing of film and which ones get marketed etc. Each person offers a theory pertaining to a particular part of film.
