Radio is an important technology in the 30s/40s (transmits live events) Could this be a filmmaker daydream that would otherwise not exist in real life (ie. when chaplin goes through the machine) Communist parade (fear of foreign influence, system failures (large gap between rich getting richer and poor unemployed, factories exist, but no jobs)) Last scene of the film: walking towards you then walking into sunset, away from factory and telling time by the sun, contrast to punch in punch out clock used in factory. In silent film, actors learn how to be more physically expressive in order to communicate without dialogue. Has no long term plan, just trying to get by, reactive. Sticks up for himself, irrepressible (ie. in jail he manages to get bread from other inmates) His response to repression is to stick up for himself. Implies about economic and social system that people survive by getting along, making things work.
