Phl 504 4: collingwood on the expression theory. Art proper vs pseudo art: art proper is the genuine thing. Pseudo art is stuff that we tend to confuse with art. The power to produce a preconceived result by means of consciously controlled and directed action. Pseudo art is craft, not art: techne, established techniques eg. carpentry, skill that"s acquired through learning, experience, to produce a preconceived result, conscious decisions, deliberate actions. Collingwood is not claiming that artists cannot use craft/techne: need to recognize distinct elements, artistic element of art proper is distinct from craftsmanship. It"s not that no works of art can involve craft, most of them do; there"s overlap. What is the equivalent of efforts like the steps that go into smithing: doesn"t seem that there"s a definite set of stuff you can do to produce poetry. Craft comes up with plan specifications and carries it out.
