Document Summary

Plato claims that the painter doesn"t produce a table, but an image of a table. The appearance of a real table is relative, always changing to us, but is always just the one table. The painter can only take one of those appearances. No number of tables could ever make someone understand the form/essence of a table -> only understanding can lead to this. Plato"s real topic is tragedy, correlates with painting. Actors act, but never commit a real action. Being a human allows us to judge actions. Aristotle sees imitation as fundamental to human life. He has a much more positive opinion towards art as opposed to socrates. Socrates is scared that the audience will get sucked in to the other characters. Aristotle recognizes this but doesn"t see it as an issue as he sees it as a cleansing spirit -> plays a big role in hegel"s.
