Document Summary

Qualities: size, colours, clusters, black holes, formation, collisions. Blue region is younger and they die faster. A protogalactic cloud spinning fast will produce a spiral galaxy. Doppler effect: if something is approaching us, its wavelengths get compresses and when they move away from us, their wavelengths are wider. If its approaching us the wave is blue shifted, if it is moving away from us it is red shifted. Change in wavelength compared to normal (lab) value gives radial velocity vr = c x / lab and = lab . Decreased wavelength means that the object is approaching is. Very decreased means it is moving fast: doppler tells us about the velocity/speed. Hubble"s law: farther galaxies move away from us faster: the farther away the galaxies are, the faster they are moving away from us. In 1963: maarten schmidt was given an odd radio spectrum, through a telescope which looked like a blue star.
