PAT 20A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Diphenhydramine, Famotidine, Cetirizine
Document Summary
Week 1 intro/pharm: discuss the concepts of pathotherapeutics and pharmacology. The study or science of drugs is known as pharmacology: discuss drug classification. By therapeutic function e. g. , antihypertensives (also subclassifications) By pharmacologic family e. g. , penicillins: differentiate between pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Study of biochemical and physiological effects of drugs on the body: what drugs do to the body & how they do it. Drug effect depends on cell or tissue targeted. Can modify the strength at which cell or tissue functions. Drug receptors : in order for a drug to modify a cell function, there must be a receptor. A drug can only attach to a receptor site for which it displays an affinity. Drugs and receptors fit like a lock and key so only certain drugs fit in one receptor. A drug can only attach to a receptor site on a cell when there is an affinity for the drug.
