NUR 80A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Qualitative Property, Grounded Theory, Qualitative Research
Document Summary
The job of the qualitative researcher: 1 hour of interview = 6 hours of transcription. In qualitative; researcher is the instrument ; trustworthiness of the data is needed ( Qualitative researchers analyze text, not numbers (interview data are usually tape recorded and transcribed [typed up] verbatim prior to analysis) Thematic analysis: qualitative data-- code them into codes -- use iterative comparison to make themes. Qualitative data management & organization: developing a coding scheme, coding scheme aka category scheme code= label or category that wil be applied to the data that will be uncovered. Identify important concepts and ideas from the data. Main task to develop system to classify/index material. Requires thorough reading of transcripts to identify underlying ideas, concepts (codes) Codes can vary in detail and level of abstraction. Data are converted to smaller manageable units and closely examined for patterns and meanings. Important concepts are then given a name or label (code)
