NSE 31A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Emerging Infectious Disease, Antigenic Shift, Passive Immunity
Document Summary
An infectious disease that is transmitted directly or indirectly from one person or animal to another. Some communicable diseases are reportable by law; others are not according to the health protection & promotion act (ontario) . other diseases are not reportable because burden of illness not as great: usually addressed through educational and supportive role. Communicable disease as a concept is broader than infectious infectious generally refers to directly transmitted from agent to host. Communicable can include disease/infection that is both directly and indirectly (vector) transmitted. Vaccine preventable diseases: (e. g. diphtheria, pertussis, rubella, hpv) Blood borne pathogens: (e. g. direct blood transmission hiv, hepatitis) Foodborne infections: e. g. (botulism, e-coli, hep a, salmonellosis) Waterborne zoonoses: (e. g. e-coli, giardiasis, cholera, typhoid fever) Vector borne diseases: transmitted though tick, mosquito, fly (e. g. lyme disease, west nile) Zoonotic infections: transmissible between animals & humans, but don"t need humans to maintain life cycle. Transmitted through bites, inhalation, ingestion, direct contact, anthrapod intermidary (e. g. rabies, hantavirus)
