Men are more likely to die of diabetes and heart disease than women. They have more lost years due to mortality from diseases and accidents. Masculinity- social construction dependent on historical time, culture and locale. Men are more constrained than women by gender ideologies as they receive greater scrutiny and stigma should they deviate to un- masculine/feminine practices. Men are only as masculine as their last demonstration of masculinity. They would rather face pain/discomfort than be aligned with feminine traits. Women have the strongest predictor of preventative and health-promotion behavior due to effective coping strategies such as receiving social support from other women. Men are less likely to take treatments such as a prostate exam due to its emasculinating treatment. Men who belong to subcultures categorized by marginalized masculinities based on race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation experience poorer health outcomes than other groups of men. Such groups include gay, aboriginal, and african-american men.
