Pregnancy heartburn, decreased gi motility, bowel sounds. Because of the sounds, we want to be able to hear without moving things around. Auscultate with the diaphragm for bs (high pitched) in rlq, bell for vascular sounds. Palpate with knees bent, as you do not want to initiate bowel sounds. If u hear a bruit u do not do the last two steps. Abdominal fat is a serious risk for cardiovascular disease. Note any vascular sounds in the arteries of the abdomen: Use the bell of the stethoscope with firm pressure. Tympany should predominate as there is air in the intestines, but you can hear a dull sound around the organs. Resonance lung, may be hyperresonance if client has emphysema.
