NSE 112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Nursing Theory, Neoliberalism, Moral Imperative
Document Summary
Value is a strong personal belief and an idea that a person or group believe to merit. Ethics is the study of the philosophical ideals of right and wrong behaviour based on what you think you ought (or ought not) to do. They influence behaviour and are a reflection of cultural and social influences, relationships and personal needs. Moral development occurs when people learn to distinguish right from wrong. Cultural values are those adopted as a result of a social setting. Values influence how you interpret confusing or conflicting information; they change as your mature. Values clarification is the process of appraising personal values. By understanding your personal values, you will become more sensitive to the values of others. In value conflict, personal values are at odds with those of a patient, a colleague or an institution. Relational communication is useful to clarify values of patients. Ethics is the study of good conduct, character and motives.
